Deadly earthquake hit the central Italy at the early hour (3.36 am) of Wednesday when most residents were asleep. Viewers Corner News source in Amatrice informed us that a deadly earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit central Italy, killing not less than 38 people and about 150 are still missing while thousands are left homeless. According to the report, many buildings in the hardest-hit towns of Amatrice, Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto and Arquata del Tronto were levelled to the ground and reduced to rubble. Voices are heard under rubble and rescuers with the help of sniffer dogs are still searching for survivors. Also patients in Amatrice hospital have been moved into the streets because the hospital was among the buildings that were badly destroyed. Pope Francis canceled part of his general audience to pray for the victims and the treasury has released emergency funds of 235 million euros ($265 million) to cater for the victims.
This is Italy’s most powerful earthquake since 2009 when the earthquake struck the central city of L’Aquila in 2009, killing more than 300 people. In the past seven centuries, six severe earthquakes including three magnitude-6 quakes in 1703 had hit the region killing 10,000 people according to report.
