Peru’s protesters are celebrating as the country’s interim president, Manuel Merino resigned from the post on Sunday after nationwide protests and growing international pressure. His (Manuel Merino) resignation came less than a week after he was inaugurated to replace the ousted president Martín Vizcarra who Peruvians see as a reformer (popular for his anti-corruption campaign). Manuel Merino, the former head of Congress was inaugurated last week Tuesday after the congress removed ex-president Martín Vizcarra on 9 November 2020 on the allegations that he accepted bribes when he was a regional governor and since then, the country (Peru) has been in turmoil. For Peruvians especially the youths, Manuel Merino was the face of a corrupt political class in the country. Our correspondent in Lima (Peru) reported that immediately President Manuel Merino announced his resignation, the protesters started celebrating. About eleven ministers including ministers of energy and mines, interior, justice and trade have also announced their resignations. Martín Vizcarra who is now facing prosecution denied wrongdoing. On Saturday, a judge ordered him (Martín Vizcarra) not to leave the country.
Amnesty International has accused Peru’s police of human rights abuses including using tear gas, buckshot and other firearms on protesters. About 94 protesters had been wounded and two died on Saturday.
