It was reported that Malawi’s former first lady, Anne Chidzira Muluzi, has passed away at the age of 69. Anne Chidzira Muluzi died of cancer in a Kenyan private hospital. Following the end of a one-party government in 1994, her husband, Bakili Muluzi was elected president, and she became the first lady. She is the first woman to hold the title of First Lady in Malawi. Her husband’s only predecessor (Hastings Kamuzu Banda) since independence was not legally married. Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, expressed his great shock at the death of the former first lady. Mr. Chakwera said that Malawians will remember Madame Chidzira Muluzi as a humble, kind, and unselfish woman who diligently served her country. Also, Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima paid tribute to her by saying that her Freedom Foundation Trust helped thousands of needy and vulnerable youngsters. The funeral preparations and repatriation of her body from Kenya have not been announced by the authorities. The late Mrs. Muluzi is survived by her son, Atupele Muluzi, the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) party’s leader. In 1999, she divorced her spouse, who served as president of Malawi until 2004. May her soul rest in peace.
