It was reported that the Chinese ex-premier, Li Peng popularly known as “Butcher of Beijing” for his role in the Tiananmen Square crackdown has died. According to the report, Li Peng died on Monday, 22 July in Beijing of an unspecified illness. He previously battled bladder cancer. Li was known worldwide for his role as the key architects of the brutal breakup of mass pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing on June 4, 1989. He proclaimed martial law on May 20, 1989, after protesters including students and workers gathered for weeks in Tiananmen Square to demand for change. Li resigned as premier in 1998 and became chairman of the National People’s Congress in China’s parliament.
