LEE MYUNG-BAK, SOUTH KOREAN EX-PRESIDENT WAS SENT BACK TO PRISON AFTER THE COUNTRY’S SUPREME COURT UPHELD HIS 17 YEAR PRISON TERM FOR CORRUPTION RELATED CRIMES.

Our (Viewers Corner News) correspondent in Seoul reported that Lee Myung-bak, 78 year old ex-president of South Korea was sent back to prison on Monday, 2 November 2020 for corruption related crimes. Ex-president Lee Myung-bak was sent back few days after South Korean top court upheld his 17-year prison term for corruption. According to the report, a convoy of black vehicles including one carrying ex-president Lee Myung-bak arrived at Dongbu Detention Center in Seoul (South Korea) on Monday where he will serve his jail term. Ex-president Lee Myung-bak who served as South Korean president from 2008-2013 was convicted for taking bribes from big companies including Samsung, embezzling corporate funds from a company that he owned and committing other corruption-related crimes. Mr Lee was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2018 by a district court in Seoul (South Korea). He was bailed months later but was taken back to custody in February 2020 after an appeal court cancelled his bail and sentenced him to 17 years in prison. He was released again, after he appealed the ruling on his bail cancellation but the country’s Supreme Court confirmed the 17-year term on Thursday last week. Ex-president Lee Myung-bak, the former Hyundai CEO won presidential election in 2007 with a promise to improve South Korean’s economy. His government was marred with global financial crisis, massive public protests over the resumption of U.S beef imports and military animosities with North Korea.
