Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general and Nobel peace laureate is dead. His foundation (Kofi Annan Foundation) announced that he died in Switzerland hospital on Saturday, 18 August 2018 after a short illness. Kofi Annan, a Ghanaian national who lived in Switzerland helped to raise the profile of the United Nations in global politics during his two terms as United Nations secretary general from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2006. He was the first black African United Nations secretary general.
In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the United Nations for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.
