KAKWENZA RUKIRABASHAIJA, THE AUTHOR OF THE GREEDY BARBARIAN (A UGANDAN NOVEL) HAS BEEN ARRESTED.

It was reported that Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, a Ugandan novelist who received a renowned medal this year for brave writing, has been arrested. According to the report, his whereabouts are unknown, although he has recently been critical of President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Lt-Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Twitter. In one of his tweets, he stated that the Musevenis have imposed immense hardship on this nation and described President Yoweri Museveni’s son as obese. Rukirabashaija’s lawyer, Eron Kiiza, said that he was being held by the police criminal intelligence department in a Kampala suburb. In his last Facebook post before being arrested, Rukirabashaija stated that he was placed under house arrest. That armed men were breaking down his door. This year, Rukirabashaija won the Pen Pinter Prize’s International Writer of Courage prize, and he is best known for The Greedy Barbarian, a satirical novel about high-level corruption in a fictional society. President Museveni, who has been in power in Uganda since 1986, is suspected of grooming his son, a senior military officer to succeed him. The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has criticised Rukirabashaija’s arrest and called for his release. On Twitter in Uganda, the author’s handle and the hashtag #FreeKakwenza are trending.
