Viewers Corner News in Tehran reported that Iranian government has closed schools and universities in the capital due to air pollution which include toxic smog. The government decided to close schools (kindergartens, preschools and schools, universities and other higher institutions) on Saturday, 30 November after a meeting of an emergency committee for air pollution was held. According to the report, a traffic scheme was imposed on roads in Tehran to restrict private vehicles and trucks were banned completely in Tehran province. Schools were also closed in the northern province of Alborz, central province of Esfahan, the northeastern city of Mashhad, Orumiyeh city in northwestern Iran and Qom (south of Tehran). People with respiratory illnesses, the young and elderly were advised to stay indoors and sporting activities were suspended. In Iran, air pollution causes about 30,000 deaths per year and most of this air pollution is caused by the activities of refineries, power plants, heavy duty vehicles and motorbikes.
