Karim Khan

The International Criminal Court in Hague has launched an investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

While the International Court of Justice considers disputes between governments, the International Criminal Court has the power to prosecute people who are found to be the most responsible for atrocities.

Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor, visited western Ukraine and Poland on Wednesday, holding a virtual discussion with Mr. Zelensky and visiting a refugee shelter. Karim Khan said that he wanted to meet with Russian authorities. Mr. Khan also stated that he is working to establish the truth and guarantee that those guilty of international crimes are brought to justice in a court of law. According to him, participants in hostilities must understand that wearing a uniform or carrying weapons does not exonerate them of accountability, but rather adds to their legal obligations. Actions against Russia are also underway at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, where interim remedies have been issued ordering Russia to stop military strikes against people and civilian objects.
