Ibrahim El Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and his wife have returned to Nigeria after rejecting medical treatment in India. According to our correspondent in Abuja (Nigeria), El Zakzaky and his wife (Zeenat Ibrahim) landed in Abuja’s international airport from New Delhi on an Ethiopian Airlines flight on Friday, 16 August after three days of travelling to India for medical treatment. The security operatives in Abuja have received them and they are back to the custody of the State Security Service. The detained leader of Shia in Nigeria and his wife were flown to India on Monday, 12 August after a court in Kaduna (Nigeria) granted them bail for medical treatment abroad but El Zakzaky who had been held in detention since December 2015 according to the report rejected medical treatment in Indian hospital and requested to come back to Nigeria after his preferred medical team was changed. Following the 2015 violence, he (El Zakzaky) was charged with murder, culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace and other offences. In 2016, a court in Nigeria granted him bail but Nigerian authority refused. The Nigerian government under President Buhari had called the group “a terrorist organisation” following a court decision.
