Hyeon Soo Lim, a Canadian pastor who was doing a humanitarian work in North Korea has been sentenced to life in prison with hard labour by the North Korean Supreme Court on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. According to report, Hyeon Soo Lim was found guilty by the highest court in North Korea for harming the dignity of the supreme leadership, trying to use religion to destroy the North Korean system, spreading negative propaganda about the country to the North Koreans living abroad. Also he was accused of helping United States and South Korean authorities lure and abduct North Korean citizens along with aiding their programs to assist defectors from the North Korea. He was a pastor under the “Light Korean Presbyterian Church” in Toronto and has been in North Korean detention since February.
Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau expressed great concern with Hyeon Soo Lim sentence and he also revealed that Canadian consular officials have not been allowed to visit Lim since he was arrested. North Korean government has strict rules against any activity it feels that threatens the supremacy of its authority and both United States and Canadian governments have warned their citizens against travelling to North Korea.
