History was made on Monday, September 26, 2016 when Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia’s (FARC) rebel force signed a peace accord with the Colombian government, apologizing for the countless of lives lost during the country’s half-century civil war. The Colombian President, Juan Manuel Santos welcomed the communist rebels into the country’s political arena after signing the accord with FARC leader, Rodrigo Timoleon Jimenez (Timochenko). The historic ceremony in the Caribbean coast city of Cartagena was witnessed by the international dignitaries who dressed in white, they included, the United States Secretary of State John Kerry, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Cuban President Raul Castro, the Vatican’s Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. The peace accord will be ratified by referendum next week according to report. European Union foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini said in a statement that EU has removed the FARC from its list of terrorist groups. The FARC guerrilla war which was launched against the Colombian government in 1964 has killed over 260,000 people, not less than 45,000 people were reported missing and about 6.9 million were displaced.
