The hate speech bill being debated among Nigerians shows to an extent that democracy is at work in the country (Nigeria) and as a result of that, the people of Nigeria are having different opinions on this bill assuming it is passed into law. The truth is that if hate speech is defined properly and followed correctly the way it should be without the government using it to intimidate or favour a certain group of people in the country (Nigeria), then it would be good if passed into law. Hate speech is capable of running any country down, it can be interpreted to mean so many things negatively. It can also destroy or cause the death of a whole nation if not controlled properly but then our (Viewers Corner News team) fear is; if this hate speech bill becomes a law in Nigeria, it may be used to target a group or a section of people in the country (Nigeria) which would not be in the best interest of Nigeria as a country. However, we (Viewers Corner News team) are appealing to lawmakers at the national assembly (Nigeria) to explain in detail to the people of the country (Nigerian) what exactly is a hate speech before passing it into law assuming it would be passed. Again, Nigeria is a democratic country and the people of the country who elected their leaders to work for the betterment of Nigeria should be able to know the importance of such hate speech bill before it is passed into law because the law concerns the Nigerian public and they need to know what is in stock for them assuming someone breaks the law.
