India has lost one of her prominent journalists, Gauri Lankesh (55 years) was shot dead on Tuesday night (August 5, 2017) at her home in Bangalore (southern city of Karnataka). According to the report, she was shot at close range (in the head and chest) by gunmen who came by motorcycle. Lankesh was an Indian prominent journalist and activist who opposed the Hindus nationalist politics. She was the editor of the newspaper “Lankesh Patrike” which was founded by her father. She also had her own weekly magazine called the Gauri Lankesh Patrike. In 2016, Lankesh was convicted of defamation and sentenced to six months in prison which she was on bail appealing the judgement before her death. In recent years, Indian journalists have been the targets of radical Hindus nationalists. In November 2015, MM Kalburgi (77 years) was murdered in his home in Dharwad, Karnataka and so many other writers, reporters in India. This killings of Indian reporters and activists has raised questions over the state of freedom of expression in the country (India).
