Viewers Corner was informed that Gambia President, Yahya Jammeh has declared his country (Gambia) an Islamic Republic on Friday, December 11, 2015. According to report, President Yahya Jammeh took this step in order to distance his country from its colonial past. In Gambia with a population of about 1.8 million people, majority of its citizens are Muslim (about 95 percent). Gambia got her independence and became a Republic within Commonwealth on April 24, 1970 and since then, it has produced only two Presidents; Dawda Jawara who ruled from 1970 to 1994 and the incumbent President, Yahya Jammeh who seized power from Dawda Jawara in a coup as a 29-year-old dictator.
In 2013, President Yahya Jammeh pulled Gambia out of the Commonwealth and he claimed that he has found cure for AIDS in 2007. The country’s main source of income is through farming, fishing and tourism.
