It was reported that ex-Colombian President Belisario Betancur has died. He died on Friday, 7 December 2018 at Santa Fe Foundation clinic in Bogota after suffering kidney problems. He was the country’s president from 1982-1986 and steered his country through one of its most turbulent periods in the 1980s. He was Colombia’s president when leftist M-19 guerrillas seized control of Bogota’s Palace of Justice in November 1985. He was also the first president of Colombia to seek peace deal with the rebel groups that emerged in the 1960s and in 2016 (more than 30 years later), the liberal government of Juan Manuel Santos finally signed a peace agreement with the main rebel group (FARC).
May the soul of ex President Belisario Betancur of Colombia rest in peace.
