Eshetu Alemu, former aide to Mengistu Haile Mariam (former communist ruler of Ethiopia) was sentenced to life in prison by a Dutch judge (judge Mariette Renckenson) on Friday, December 16, 2017. According to the information our correspondent gathered, Eshetu Alemu was found guilty of ordering the execution of camp detainees (75 prisoners) in 1978 including those under 18 years of age who were taken from their cells and strangled with ropes in a church. In 1990, Eshetu Alemu went to Netherlands as an asylum seeker and had been in custody since 2015. In 2007, Ethiopian court sentenced Alemu to death in absentia for his role in the “Red Terror” which Mengistu’s military junta conducted after Haile Selassie (Ethiopian emperor) was removed in 1974.
