Erol Onderoglu, Turkey representative for Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Sebnem Korur Fincanci (rights activist) and journalist Ahmet Nesin have been acquitted of terror charges by an Istanbul court on Wednesday, 17 July 2019. They were accused of making terror propaganda on behalf of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). On Wednesday during the court hearing, only Sebnem Korur Fincanci attended the trial while Erol Onderoglu and Ahmet Nesin were abroad. The accusation came after the three guest-edited Ozgur Gundem (pro-Kurdish Turkish newspaper) in 2016. If convicted, they would have faced 14 years in prison. Ozgur Gundem newspaper was raided and shut down permanently in August 2016. Sebnem Korur Fincanci, Erol Onderoglu and Ahmet Nesin were arrested and detained shortly in 2016. The three campaigners can now apply for compensation for the time spent in prison. Since 1984, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has been waging attacks against the Turkey.
