The United States Supreme Court has halted the execution of a 50-year-old Ernest Johnson who was sentenced to death for killing three people in 1994 during store robbery. According to court records, Ernest Johnson used a hammer, screw driver and a gun to kill Mary Bratcher, Mabel Scrubbs and Fred Jones in a store robbery which occurred in 1994. He was scheduled to die by lethal injection at the state prison in Bonne Terre, Missouri after 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 4, 2015 but his attorney petitioned that he suffers from a slow growth brain tumor that was partially removed in 2008 and executing him with pentobarbital which numbs the central nervous system including parts of the brain would cause him to experience seizures and pain which is in violation of the US Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual punishment.” He also stated that Ernest Johnson has an intellectual disability and should not be executed. The United States highest court then delayed his execution pending a ruling on whether his medical condition would cause undue pains and suffering.
