The 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro (the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman) was on Monday arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia (United States) on drug charges. Emma Coronel Aispuro is allegedly involved in international drug trafficking. The United States Justice Department stated that Emma Coronel Aispuro is facing charges of helping her husband and others to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the United States. Prosecutors said that Coronel (a dual citizen of the US and Mexico) conspired with others to assist her husband escaped from a prison in Mexico on 11 July 2015. After her husband Guzmán was rearrested in Mexico in January 2016, she started planning for her husband’s prison escape before he was extradited to the United States in January 2017. Joaquin Guzman (El Chapo), a longtime head of the Sinaloa drug cartel was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to life plus 30 years in federal prison. Guzman and Coronel have been together since 2007 and they have twin daughters who were born in 2011. Coronel’s father (Ines Coronel Barreras) was arrested in 2013 with one of his sons and several men in a warehouse with hundreds of pounds of marijuana across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Ines Coronel Barreras was sanctioned for his alleged drug trafficking by the United States Treasury. On Tuesday, 23 February 2021, Emma Coronel Aispuro appeared during a virtual hearing in federal court in Washington, D.C. and the judge ordered her to be detained on charges she conspired with her husband to run a multibillion dollar Sinaloa cartel while he was behind bars. If convicted on all charges, Coronel faces up to life in prison.
