A bomb detonated by a roadside in Egypt’s northern Sinai peninsula has killed a police officer and a soldier on Saturday, December 31, 2016. The remotely-detonated bomb was targeted at a security vehicle which is used to intercept signals of explosive devices while the vehicle was passing during a security operation on the main road in the city of El-Arish. No claim of responsibility has been made as of the time of this report, but since ex-president Mohamed Mursi was removed by the military, the Islamist insurgency has increased in Egypt. In 2014, the militant group pledged allegiance to Islamic State and adopted the name Sinai Province.
