Denmark on Thursday, 31 May 2018 joined some European countries to ban wearing of Islamic veils (niqab or burqa) or garments that cover the face. The law which is popularly called “Burqa ban” was presented by the center-right governing coalition and approved in a vote of 75-30 with 74 absentees. The law (Burqa ban) will be effective from August 1, 2018. The offender will be fined 1,000 kroner ($156) for the first time and repeated offences will go up to 10,000 kroner ($1,600) or a jail sentence of up to six months. Also anyone forcing or threatening another person to wear burqa will be fined or face a jail term of up to two years. In Austria, Belgium and France, the same law is applicable.
