The 65 year old former trade unionist, Cyril Ramaphosa has been sworn in as the new president of South Africa, ending Jacob Zuma’s turbulent nine years of leading the country. President Cyril Ramaphosa was elected on Thursday, February 15, 2018 by the parliament after ex-president Jacob Zuma reluctantly resigned on Wednesday. Jacob Zuma was forced to resign after the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party turned against him due to series of corruption allegations against him. Ramaphosa who is the fifth president of South Africa after the end of apartheid in 1994 faces the challenges of the country’s long term slow economic growth and 26.7-percent unemployment.
