The Burundi’s government wrote to the United Nations secretary-general recently, stating that Burundi does not want the United Nations special envoy office to remain in the country. Our correspondent learned that in a letter which Albert Shingiro (Burundi’s minister of foreign affairs) sent to the United Nations secretary-general, he stated that Burundi has achieved peace, security and stability after a deadly political crisis in the country. He also said that the office has no reason to be in the country and will be closed by the end of 2020. The United Nations special envoy office was opened in 2016 in Burundi when the country was experiencing political crisis during the time of late former President Pierre Nkurunziza, following his decision to pursue another term. The office was mandated to mediate between Burundi’s government and its opponents.
