Viewers Corner News was informed that the Bulgarian parliament has voted for the ban of women wearing veils and burqas (facial coverings) in public places. The new law which was enacted recently by the Bulgaria parliament will affect about 12 percent of Bulgaria’s population who are Muslims. This means that in Bulgaria, Women who wear clothing that partially or completely covers the face is now banned and Bulgaria’s government stated that the new law is not directed against religious communities but a public safety measure.
France was the first country to enact a law in 2010 which bans women from wearing veil or burqas in public places due to a desire to protect French secularism and public safety. In 2011, Belgium followed suit and also cited the same reasons. The Dutch parliament also approved in 2015 a burqa ban in public places like schools, hospitals, transportation, and government buildings.
