It was reported that the members of the International Criminal Court on Friday last week elected British barrister Karim Khan as the next prosecutor of the war crimes tribunal. Barrister Karim Khan, the assistant United Nations secretary-general will succeed Fatou Bensouda when her 9-year term expires later this year. Barrister Khan defeated his contenders with 72 votes to win the second ballot of the 123 parties to the Rome Statute that established the tribunal. Fergal Gaynor of Ireland got 42 votes, Carlos Castresana Fernandez from Spain got 5 votes and Francesco Lo Voi of Italy received 3 votes. International Criminal Court prosecutor holds position that is one of the toughest jobs in international law because the court has mandate to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Barrister Karim Khan specialized in international criminal law and international human rights law. He currently leads a United Nations team that are investigating allegations of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the Islamic State group in Iraq. He worked as a prosecutor at the international criminal court prosecuting war crimes in former Yugoslavia and crimes against humanity and genocide in Rwanda. He is also Seif al-Islam Gadhafi (Moammar Gadhafi’s son) counsel who ICC accused of crimes against humanity.
