The 31 year old Sebastian Kurz was on Monday sworn in as Austria’s new Chancellor. He was sworn in after his party (Conservative People’s Party) formed a coalition with the nationalist Freedom Party. The new coalition was agreed on Friday, December 15, 2017 by the Conservative People’s Party (OeVP) and the Freedom Party (FPOe) and the two parties pledged to stop illegal immigration, cut taxes and resist EU centralisation. Freedom Party has control of the Interior, Defense and Foreign Ministries and Heinz-Christian Strache (the party’s leader) is the new Austria vice chancellor. About 6,000 people protested outside President Alexander Van der Bellen’s office while the swearing in was going on. Sebastian Kurz was the country’s foreign minister in the outgoing government led by former Chancellor Christian Kern. At 31 years, Sebastian Kurz will be the youngest leader in Europe. Congratulations.
