US Secretary of State Antony Blinken

ANTONY BLINKEN HAS APPOINTED FORMER UNITED STATES ADVISER RINA AMIRI AS A SPECIAL ENVOY FOR AFGHAN WOMEN.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently appointed Rina Amiri, a former US government aide who questioned the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan as a special envoy for Afghan women, children, and human rights. Blinken said in a statement that the world wants an Afghanistan that is peaceful, secure, and safe, where all Afghans can live and develop in a democratic, economic, and social eenvironment. He also stated that the Special Envoy Amiri and him would work closely together to achieve that goal. Rina Amiri has spent the last two decades advising governments, the UN, and think tanks on Afghanistan-related issues. Under President Barack Obama’s administration, she worked as a senior adviser to the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. In August, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan as the old Western-backed government fell apart and the last American forces departed after a 20-year conflict. Since then, the Taliban have restricted the rights of women and girls, prohibiting the majority of women from working and girls from attending school. The US officials see this as a U-turn by the Islamist extremists from their promises to respect human rights. Also Women’s rights organizations have blasted the Biden administration for failing to provide safe passage for activists and others who have long been targeted by the Taliban. Amiri previously stated that the process of removing women at risk was a nightmare. According to the Taliban, women must be escorted by a close male family member while traveling more than 45 miles. They also made listening to music while driving illegal. The US and other governments have criticized the Taliban of failing to build an open administration and have raised alarm about allegations of extrajudicial killings and the abduction of former Afghan security forces members.
