Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General has called on all parties both Libyan and international to respect Libya interim government. Mr Guterres made the appeal on Friday, 5 February 2021 while welcoming the formation of a new interim government for Libya. He pleaded that everybody should recognize and accept the new government and also work with the newly elected authorities in Libya. According to him, this is important so as to unify Libya and move the country on the way to peace. On Friday, 5 February 2021, United Nations sponsored talks in Geneva produced an interim government for Libya. Abdul Hamid Dbeibah from the western city of Misrata was elected as Libya’s prime minister, Mohamed al-Manfi from the east (Benghazi) was elected as the head of a three-man presidency council, Musa al-Koni is the deputy representing the country’s south and Abdullah al-Lafi from the west is in the presidency council. This is the first time Libya would have a unified government since 2014 the country was split between rival governments backed by foreign powers in the west and east.
