ANGELA MERKEL WINS FOURTH TERM IN OFFICE AS GERMAN CHANCELLOR.

Germany held her 2017 election on Sunday, September 24, 2017 and Angela Merkel (63 years) wins 4th term in office as the Chancellor of the country. Angela Merkel party Christian Democrats Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) won the election with 33 percent of the vote with an estimated 218 seats in the federal parliament making it the largest party in the Bundestag. Her party (CDU/CSU) probably because of her immigration policy went down compared to the 2013 election where they got 41.5 percent of the vote and this will push her to form a coalition government. Martin Schulz of Social Democrat (Merkel’s main rival) got 20 percent of the vote with estimated 138 seats in the federal parliament. Schulz said that his party (SPD) will go into opposition, thereby pulling out from its coliation with CDU. The right-wing nationalist Alternative für Deutschland (AFD) came third in Germany’s election with 13% of the vote and 88 seats in the federal parliament. But on Monday, the leader of AFD (Frauke Petry) dropped a bombshell that she is quitting the party to serve as an independent member of the parliament for her constituency in Saxony. Angela Merkel who was born in Hamburg assumed office as German Chancellor (the first German female chancellor) in April 2005 and she is married to Joachim Sauer. Congratulations to Angela Merkel.
