AN EGYPTIAN CRIMINAL COURT HAS SENTENCED RAOUF BOUTROS-GHALI TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SMUGGLING ARTIFACTS TO ITALY.

It was reported that a Criminal Court in Cairo was on Saturday sentenced Raouf Boutros-Ghali (who is an actor and former finance minister’s brother) to 30 years in prison for smuggling artifacts to Italy. The court also fined him (Raouf Boutros-Ghali) 6 million Egyptian pounds ($382,000). Boutros-Ghali is a brother of Yousef Boutros-Ghali (former finance minister) and a nephew of former U.N. Secretary-General (Boutros Boutros-Ghali). Three others involved in the case including Italian ex-honorary consul to Egypt (Ladislav Skakal) were sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of one million Egyptian pound each. Our correspondent in Cairo learned that Ladislav Skakal was sentenced in abstentia. The case began in 2017 when Italian police seized parcels with artifacts from various countries, including Egyptian’s antiquities. The smuggled artifacts from Egypt included five burial masks, 11 vessels, 151 small statues and thousands of coins from different eras.
