AN APPELLATE COURT IN BRAZIL UPHOLDS A CORRUPTION CONVICTION AGAINST EX PRESIDENT LUIZ INACIO DA SILVA.

The Brazilian former president’s (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva) corruption conviction was on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 unanimously upheld by an appellate court judges in the southern city of Porto Alegre (Brazil). The judges increased his jail time to 12 years and one month, an increase of more than two years from the sentence given to him in July 2017 by Judge Sergio Moro. The 72-year-old was the president of the country (Brazil) from 2003 to 2010 and he was convicted of corruption and money laundering charges (he was allegedly promised an apartment as a payoff by a construction company in return for contracts). The decision of the court would affect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s hope of running for a third term.
