It was reported that Alexei Navalny, a Russian political activist, had received the European Union’s top human rights prize (the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought). According to the report, the award was a recognition of Navalny’s years-long role as Russia’s political opposition leader. Navalny, who escaped an assassination attempt and is currently imprisoned in Russia, accused President Vladimir Putin of destroying Russia’s post-Soviet democracy and planning to kill him. He also accused President Vladimir Putin of siphoning off Russia’s oil wealth to enrich his allies and family and using his authority to maintain his grip on power. Navalny’s hard fight and campaign against the corruption of President Vladimir Putin’s government, in which he nearly lost his life and cost his liberty, were praised by David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament.
