Viewers Corner News correspondent in Italy gathered that about 3,400 migrants were rescued over the weekend by Italian coastguard and naval vessels. According to the information, 2,300 people were rescued from 18 small boats that were heading to Italy on Saturday, September 10th while about 1,100 migrants were rescued off the coast of Libya on Sunday making it a total of 3,400 migrants. The Italy interior ministry stated that about 124,500 migrants have arrived Italy since the beginning of 2016 as against 122,000 recorded for the whole 2015 and most of these migrants were from the sub-Saharan Africa. The ministry also said that Italy currently has 155,000 migrants in reception centres as against 103,000 in 2015 and 66,000 in 2014.
These migrants were picked up by Italian coastguard and naval vessels, a British and an Irish warship, Aquarius (hired by the groups SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders) and several ships chartered by humanitarian NGOs.
