At last, the Manhattan prosecutor (Attorney Cyrus R. Vance) has obtained ex-president Donald Trump’s tax documents after the United States Supreme Court rejected Donald Trump’s battle to prevent the prosecutor from getting hold of his tax records. Our correspondent in New York learned that after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Monday, 22 February 2021, the Manhattan district attorney’s office enforced a subpoena on ex-president Donald Trump’s accounting firm and now the tax documents are with the prosecutor. Donald Trump’s tax documents are protected by grand jury secrecy rules and are not expected to be made public. For more than a year, the District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance had been fighting to obtain Donald Trump’s tax records for a criminal grand jury investigation into his business dealings. He (District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr) is carrying out investigation which includes whether ex-president Trump or his companies lied about the value of assets to gain favourable loan terms and tax benefits. In August 2019, District Attorney Vance’s office issued a subpoena to Trump’s accounting firm (Mazars USA), seeking eight years of Trump’s tax returns and related documents, but Donald Trump’s legal counsels rushed to court to block its enforcement. They argued that Donald Trump being president then was immune from being investigated. Ex-president Trump called Vance’s investigation, the greatest witch hunt in history.
