It was reported that 37 people were on Monday sentenced to prison by a criminal court in Cairo (Egypt) for joining or supporting Islamic State’s Sinai Province affiliate. The militants loyal to Islamic state group have been causing havoc in the north of the Sinai Peninsula and other parts of Egypt, hundreds of soldiers, police and civilians have lost their lives as a result of their insurgency activities. According to the report, the court sentenced eight defendants to life in prison and 29 others to jail terms ranging from one to 15 years. Seven defendants were acquitted. The defendants can appeal against the court’s judgment at the court of cassation (Egypt’s top civilian court).
