On Saturday, 28 July 2018, an Egyptian court sentenced 75 people including prominent members of outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group (Mohamed el-Baltagui, Issam al-Aryan and Safwat Hijazi) to death for their involvement in August 14, 2013 sit-in. The 75 defendants have been referred to the Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam (Egypt’s highest Islamic legal official) for an opinion before execution can take place and those sentenced are subject to appeal. The charges according to the report range from murder to damaging public property and the case involves 739 defendants including Mohammed Badie (the Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide) and Mahmoud Abu Zeid (photojournalist) for killing more than 600 people including policemen and vandalising property in clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi where sit-in at Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda Square were held.
