A court in France on Monday, 01 March 2021 sentenced former president Nicolas Sarkozy to three years in prison for corruption and influence peddling. The court suspended two years of the sentence. The judge said that ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy does not need to serve jail terms in prison, but could serve the sentence by wearing an electronic bracelet at home. Ex-president Sarkozy was French president from 2007 to 2012, and was found guilty for trying to obtain information illegally from a senior magistrate about an ongoing investigation into his campaign finances in 2014. He is the second French president in modern times to have been convicted, after former president Jacques Chirac who was convicted in 2011 for misuse of public funds.
