A COURT IN EGYPT HAS SENTENCED HISHAM AL-ASHMAWY (FORMER SPECIAL FORCES OFFICER TURNED ISLAMIC MILITANT) AND 36 OTHERS TO DEATH.

It was reported that Hisham al-Ashmawy (a former special forces officer turned Islamic militant) and 36 others have been sentenced to death after an Egyptian court convicted them on terrorism charges. Hisham al-Ashmawy was arrested in Derna (Libyan city) in 2018 and authorities loyal to commander Khalifa Haftar extradited him to Egypt in May 2019. He (Hisham al-Ashmawy) was convicted on several charges including planning an attack in 2014 which killed 22 military guards and being involved in an attempted murder of a former interior minister in 2013. Before he pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2014, Ashmawy led the Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (Egypt’s most active militant group).
