Information available to Viewers Corner News revealed that a bridge constructed in Okene by the administration of governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state collapsed weeks after it was built. The Viewers Corner News team believes that corruption at the highest level was involved. Now hear this, a contractor was awarded a contract to build a bridge, and the people who awarded the contract took a percentage of the money the contractor would receive for the job. In the end, the contractor would have no choice but to use a sub-standard material for the job so that he or she could be able to make some little gain out of the job. This and more may have contributed to why the bridge would not be built to a good standard, which would lead to the collapse of such a project. Who is to be blamed for this? It was the government officials who awarded the contract because if they had allowed the contractor to do the job properly without demanding kickbacks, the contractor would have been able to use quality materials to complete the project that would last for a long period of time. This attitude is happening in every sector of the economy of Nigeria. Those working in government offices in Nigeria are only interested in getting a cut of every contract the government awards to contractors, which is bad. Greed, selfishness and corruption at all levels of government have ruined Nigeria and until real punishment is given to those involved in this practice, such aspects of indiscipline will not stop.
