It was reported that an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck Taiwan’s east coast on Tuesday, killing about six people and wounded 256 others while 76 are still unaccounted for as at the time of this report. According to the report, the Hualien county is the worst hit by the earthquake and two employees of the Marshal hotel were among those killed. More than one hundred rescue workers were on the ground to free people trapped by the earthquake. Taiwan is frequently affected by earthquakes due to its position along the Ring of Fire (the seismic faults encircling the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur). In 2016, an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude killed 115 people when an apartment complex in southern Taiwan collapsed. Also in 1999, more than 2,300 people lost their lives when an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck central Taiwan.
